Story for Aspen basin recon - rain, wind, crash

Today's ride is a re-try at yesterday's plan to make it to Aspen Basin at 3200 Meters and home to Ski Santa Fe.  Yesterday's attmept failed for a couple of reasons.

Biggest factor: late departure.   As I was peadling up the mountain I saw other cyclists descending (2.5 hours ahead of my plan) and dark skies.  Oh, and because of the afternoon timeframe, a storm is moving in with 20-30 kph headwinds.

Also: I'ts a steep ascent.  The first 10K is mild with an average of 2% grade.  The next section is 5K at about 4% grade followed by 2K descent at about 7% (just more moutain to climb next).  The real work starts 16K from my central Sanata Fe start point; 22K climb to Aspen Basin at grades from 6% to 14%.  The lower half averages bout 6% and the upper half (well, what I saw) about 8%.

My second attempt ended at 25.5K with 8.5K left to climb to the ski basin.  There was a stretch of 9-11 % road ahead before "leveling off" at 6-8%.  With yesterday's fatigue and the dark sky, I decided to leave this summit for another trip to NM.  (Mayyyyybe coulda made it in an hour and 15 or 30 minutes more)

Anyway, statrted to descend and sure enough half way down it started to rain.  All was well until back in Santa Fe at an intersection with train tracks.  With water for lubricant, my tire did not have traction on the rail to make the oblique angle crossing and my tire went right into the gap between the rail and the concrete.  Slid to a stop on the ground in the intersaction.  (added photos of the dry version of the tracks).
