I may not be a record breaker.... but, one step at a time.
I've never been a runner, I've never been close to being an Athlete of any kind, but god loves a trier, or so I'm told (I'm not religious FYI).
Last Christmas, I hit my heaviest weight ever. It wasn't on the obesity scale, but I felt horrid. My clothes didn't fit, my skin wasn't great, I was lethargic and lazy quite frankly. My exercise routine consisted of; walking to a nice restaurant or bar, or walking to the veg shop and butcher to cook up something delicious. In a nutshell, my life was all about food, drink, and the dreaded cancer sticks.
I met my partner (Lauren) in 2015. One of the first things she said to me was "I will never tell you what to do, but please don't smoke around me". So, I decided to pack the nasty habit in once and for all. However, the damage was already done to my poor lungs.
We decided to start running together, to lose the chub, get fit and to do something active together that we both enjoy that didn't include high quantities of food and alcohol. The first run was AWFUL. Lauren is 7 years younger than me, has been physically active her entire life - I on the other hand am +30 and have enjoyed the good life too much. I was mortified - 5 minutes into the run and I had to stop, I thought I was going to throw up, I couldn't breathe. I cursed the day I ever picked up my first cigarette.
To cut a long story short, I persevered with the support and encouragement from Lauren, she got me to a point where I could run a 5K comfortably without stopping, then it became a little more competitive – trying to beat my PB with each 5K.
For people who run, 5K will be nothing, a walk in the park perhaps. But for me, it was the first big achievement towards a much bigger goal.
Step 2: the dreaded 10K. No-one told me that running continuously for an hour would be so difficult. You need a completely different mind-set for this. I have the attention span of a fly so to be able to be left alone with my thoughts for this long (and telling my inner evil monkey to fu*k off when it constantly tells me “you cannot do this; you are not a runner”) was a challenge in itself.
I hate the term “it’s been a journey”, but in this case it really has. Last week, I completed my first competitive 10K in Durham. What kept me going around that very hilly, tough course was that I wanted to prove to myself that I could do something completely out of my comfort zone. I was terrified, I don’t remember ever being so nervous about doing anything before. But what a rollercoaster of emotions – no one warned me about the complete euphoria you feel after you have achieved something like this. I didn’t sleep for 2 days afterwards!
Now, I am addicted. I am on Strava, and my Garmin is my running chum. Not only am I fitter, I feel great. After a long and at times very difficult day at work, the last thing I want to do is put my runners on, but I do – most week days. Afterwards, I have never regretted it. My knees and my Achilles hurt most days, but it’s worth it.
I commute across the UK every week for my work (I live in Bristol and work in Durham and London), which is incredibly difficult and sometimes extremely stressful and exhausting, but running has helped me in many ways – the week is now my boot-camp so I can enjoy my weekends and not feel guilty for it.
I may not have broken any records, and I know I’m not unique with my experiences, but for anyone who has told themselves they can’t run – don’t give up. If I can do it, anyone can.
