Debut @ Ikano Robin Hood Marathon 2016 [BPM:1335]
Conditions were great on the day. A light breeze and around 12C. Did warm up a touch in the second half of the race but this wasn't a limiting factor.
My first marathon. Loved the experience. Was pleased with the time 3:24:12 but hopeful of doing it all over again and running a faster time in the future.

- No t-shirt but a beautiful chunky medal
Observations
My BPM score was very high. BPM = Beats per Minute. It's a gauge of running efficiency. Simply multiply the Average Pace Per Mile (7:30min/mile would be 7.5) times your average Heart Rate (I think mine ended up @ 178 ~88% of my MHR (Max Heart Rate).
I'd only expect such a high number on a really hilly course. What happened during the race was that my heart rate drifted higher and higher.
The impact of the marathon on my body caused my Heart Rate to be ticking up at 190 by mile 24 whilst still steady jogging.
I'd tried a bit of a walk run strategy to help my heart rate subside a little but progress was to slow so tried to pick the legs up into some sort of waddling, ploddy rhythm.
Notes for next time:
- More strength and conditioning
- More longer runs (20 miles in training really didn't test me enough)
- Fast-finish training runs
- More speed work.
- Longer lead in (I started 10 weeks ouut, lost a few weeks to holiday and the kids being off school)
