Canaccord Corporate Cup event 2
This post was inspired solely by a single event - the 2nd of five 5k runs along the St Helier waterfront. The first run of which became a 5k PB, as well as those for 3km, 2 miles and 3 miles, despite needing to have a little walk in the second half of the race.
So going into this race, I could no longer say that I wasn't too sure what sort of time I was capable of, however I also didn't seem to have much self-confidence either. I'd said, and genuinely felt, that virtually any time between 23 and 26 minutes would be well within the range of acceptable performance.
I started out quite quickly but made a point of slowing a fraction with the aim of keeping myself within a pace level I could sustain through more or less the whole race. But I also knew the middle third of the race would be more tough because of a headwind along pretty much the whole length of the course.
My first kilometre came in at 4:33 which was under control but quite quick. Early in the race I figured that kilo splits of 4:30 and 4:40 would get me in around 23 minutes - which I didn't think was plausible. But 4:33 put me around or abouts the same time as event 1. But I expected the middle kilometres to be slower.
I held most of my pace but it was slower - but still very consistent at 4:46, 4:44 then 4:46 again. So I knew that if I did speed up a little then I'd be around the same sort of time. I wasn't thinking at this stage that I had more speed in me so as a result I wasn't really chasing my personal best again.
However, I did speed up a little completing the final kilometre in 4:34 bringing me in at a final time officially just 1.3 seconds slower than the event before - 23:27.3. Close to a PB but because it was a consistently truer run race I'm almost happier with it.
And actually my second fastest 5k ever is still something to be massively proud of.
Next race is in 2 weeks again. How I'll play that one, who knows?
