Canaccord Corporate Cup event 5 - and another PB!

The 5th and final event of the Corporate Cup 5k series was different to the rest. Historically, the final event tended to be a bit of a get together and prize giving (or so I'm told since I'd never taken part before this season). But in these times of course "getting together" is very much not on the agenda. However, the final event remained an evening event and because of the time of year it meant the later start waves might go into the dark.
 

I ran in the final wave, starting at 7pm, so would take part in the final event of all. As before there was one other person, from work, running in the wave and I knew she was a little quicker than me and properly enough that I wouldn't even try and run with her, and in fact joked about it during the day at work. Her and her fancy 22 minute ways!
 

There was talk before the run of collecting medals at the finish. That was a surprise as I wasn't expecting one. The first one since Kempton Park way back in March.
 

The run weather wasn't looking too clever. It had been raining although had eased off a bit but it was very windy and that was always going to be a fair challenge.
 

Maybe it was the later starting time, but there were significantly fewer runners - I guessed about 16 or so - so realistically I was probably going to be well down the small field.

 

 

We started a little early and I found myself following my work colleague. Knowing her likely time, I thought we should be going quickly but it also didn't feel it. I didn't see my speed at first so assumed it was not brilliant, but not long after I saw my watch giving me a predicted finishing time in the low 22s. Ok that's cool. I might be feeling ok but it was still too quick.

I dialed it back a fraction but didn't find myself dropping back away from my pacer colleague. The first kilo went through in a slightly too quick sounding 4:34 remembering this was into a fairly unpleasant wind. The wind picked up some more at the far end of the course and turning around didn't seem much better. 4:42 was slower but still ok.
 

The wind was to our backs in the third kilometre and it was faster but I became sure my pace was not quite sustainable. I started dropping from my work colleague but even so the 3rd kilo was, for me, a very rapid 4:32.
 

 

 

 

The dropping back accelerated a bit but I held my pace well enough at 4:38. Then the course turned towards the harbour and by the side of the Radisson hotel the wind got particularly ridiculous. Blowing us back to the extent that it was truly an effort just to move forward.
 

The run along the harbour wall was unusually not as windy as it can be but I also didn't feel much acceleration. However, I did realise having run the route a fair few times that the amended course was short so I had to be prepared that if I was on PB pace I'd need to keep running after the race finish.

I held the pace all the way to finish but rather than looking at my watch I just kept running. Firstly, towards my watching family, on the way past "I need to keep going" knowing my wife would correctly interpret this as "I'm on for a PB so can't stop short". I think there were some strange looks at the finish back they'd soon understand.

 

 

I stopped my watch at 23:03 although Strava later rounded that down to an incredible 22:58. Before the start of this series I'd have been delighted to get under 24 minutes. A couple of months later I had run my fastest three 5ks ever and had jumped all the way down to the 22s. Amazing.

 

 

Attention then turned to trail runs and the continued build up towards what I hope will be Silverstone in November and maybe chasing a sub 48?
