I recently travelled to Reunion to explore the trails on the island. The raw beauty there is incredible, the sheer cliff faces that rise up from the sea to over 3000m asl are truly breath-taking. On this particular run we started on the volcano, the Piton Maido, and run a sensational route down towards the ocean, finishing in San Souci. The pipe track along the wall of the valley was probably the greatest experience I have ever had on a trail before. I slowed down so the group I was with disappeared off into the distance, soon it was just me and the most overwhelming views. It is very rare that a run can be emotional but this was more than a physical mission for me, it was emotional. At the end of the run I needed at least another 10k to finish soaking it all in, it was one of those runs where time, fatigue and distance seem to completely not be a factor at all, you know, those rare times where you feel like you can just go and go and go and go. I hope to go back one day soon.
