Km0Navalcarbon

Back in the 90’s, as a child, I used to go running on the weekends with my neighbor and his dad. He used to take us for short runs to the woods near home on his trainings. At that time, running was a very strange activity for a youngster. It was difficult to find someone burning the sole of his trainers just for fun so I stopped running when my neighbors moved to the south of Spain and I got orphan of  training partners.

I consider myself a privileged with lots of exciting stories around the running world ever since. Nevertheless, the reason why I am writing my first post is for something that I find very iconic that happened this weekend.

For some nasty reasons some friends and I left our triathlon club early this season. After the initial shock of our new status, out of the club, we started a new Telegram chat and Strava goup to keep in touch called Km0Navalcarbon. The group takes it’s name from the start of the most popular circuit in our city. 6 Km circuit around the wonderful pine forest of las Rozas. As an anecdote I’ll tell you that couple of Olympic athletes live in las Rozas so Strava KOMs are something out of reach for humans in this area. The 6 Km circuit belonged of course one of them, LMKenya, the pseudonym of Atlanta and Sidney 5th qualified on the 3.000 m steeplechase.

Back to our project, and after a month we are now 50 people at Km0Navalcarbon. People from different clubs but also with no club and a wide range of ages, sex and conditions are joining us. It’s been a great surprise to find how many people share the same idea that I have ever since I got orphan of training partners in my youth. “Training with friends is the best way to enjoy the sport!”.

As usual there was a group meeting yesterday. I left home with time for two laps but before the meeting time of the group so I decided to make one lap pushing hard and trying to arrive to the start for a second lap with the bunch. Not sure for how long but Km0Navalcarbon has it’s name KOM! One of those unbelievable events that only takes place thanks to Strava where an amateur plays to be pro! God knows there will be a reaction, but that will be another day!
