Story for On the Winds of Giants
Nowhere does it say that if you ride against the wind in one direction, that coming back the wind will be at your back. Because that never happens, especially on my favorite roads in the hills of west-central New Jersey.
Dressed a tad too warmly but definitely OK in terms of dealing with downhills drafts, I made my way towards Pottersville, climbing to reach one of my favorite downhills. This time, however, it was like I was being pushed UPHILL on a route I normally hit at close to 40 mph. And I was being buffeted with crosswinds that threatened to knock me off my bike; I had to hold on with all my might just to stay upright.
Of course, changing direction heading home sounded like a perfectly good way to get a little boost...but not today. Still pushing hard in my face were constant winds of 20 miles per hour. Finally arriving home after two hours of fighting the wind, I felt drained physically, but oh so happy mentally. A good fight on a beautiful day had turned out all right.
