Story for NYRR tempo thursday
Tomorrow we’ll finish up our final week with a second trip to the Hudson River Greenway.
We’ll jog in our groups from the RunCenter to the river at 59th Street (warming up with our drills and strides on the way) and meet on the Greenway pedestrian/bike path, where we’ll start an approximately 29:59.99 out-and-back tempo run heading north. Because you just did a tempo run with five hard pickups in it last Thursday on the Great Hill, we’ll give you a break: instead of doing our typical last Thursday workout (coincidentally, a tempo run with five pickups in it), we’ll just be doing a regular old tempo run (what a concept)—with one twist: we’ll encourage you to use your awesome new finishing speed on the final 300-meter straightaway.
In both morning and evening, we’ll be running through the Boat Basin Café:

• Don’t worry: it’s open to pedestrians
We’ll forego the somewhat bizarre experience of running on the Worst Track in the World this time around, so we'll have the best chance of getting everyone through the café and up to the pleasant mid-level promenade between the Greenway and Riverside Drive, somewhere along which you’ll get to your 15-minute mark, turn back, and start trying to run enough of a negative split to hold off all of your teammates—or catch them, as the case may be. When you turn your last curving corner after crossing a small footbridge, you can make a final effort to do one of those things, or possibly both, by lifting your knees, landing on your forefeet, driving your arms both forward and back (not to the sides), and producing slightly more than one minute of running at Level 9 to finish the workout and the eight-week session with a flourish. (Extra credit for passing or holding off Coach Bobby.)
