Story for NYRR Tempo Thursday
Our basic format is (1) a warmup (2) a workout, (3) a strengthening session, and (4) a stretching/relaxation aftermath:
(1) The warmup includes jogging, form drills (exercises that accentuate and improve aspects of good running form), and “strides,” which are short, relaxed accelerations of about 50 meters.
(2) The workout will almost always involve an uninterrupted run (possibly with one blatant exception), but the run may be configured in any of several ways, all of them aimed at making you better at running while enjoying the process, at least occasionally.
(3) Just when you think you’re done with the hard part, we throw a five- to ten-minute strength-building session at you, during which our coaches, many of whom practice perversely difficult disciplines in their spare time, exhort you to convolute yourself in ways that will render your upper body worthy of being attached to your svelte and muscular lower extremities.
(4) Then we leave you with some flexibility and relaxation exercises, which should come as a relief, considering what you’ve just endured.
All but one of the Thursday workouts will start at the NYRR RunCenter, which is on the south side of West 57th Street, a bit closer to Eighth Avenue than to Ninth, at 6:30 (AM or PM). Restrooms, changing rooms, water fountains, and some nice high-tech interactive maps and other resources are available in there. There are also 78 lockers. If those all fill up, we provide a baggage-watching crew named Luilly (pron. “Luigi”) and Melinda (pron. “Melinda”). No one messes with them, unless it’s Coach Benjamin Green , who can’t help it.
We’ll be giving you your first workout tomorrow, so please dress to run. We’ll start a pre-workout introductory talk at the stroke of 6:30 (both AM and PM), so it’s a good idea to get to the RunCenter a bit before that to check in with our attendance-taker and stash your stuff.
The workouts will be held in any weather conditions except unsafe ones; in the unlikely case that we have to cancel a workout, we’ll send the news through e-mail and on this page. We had a close call with today’s morning workout, but despite what you see out your window at the moment, we’re told that the Central Park drives will be cleared by our start time and that nothing else will be precipitated upon us during our time together.
Tomorrow’s workout will be an out-and-back tempo run on West Drive. We’d typically try to give you a more variegated and interesting course, but under the circumstances, we’re glad to have West Drive to work with.
