Day 8: The perfect antidote to a long hot bike ride

Today's ride was basically ruined by poor route planning; not the fault of our crew (who were following the itinerary from the tour company). The plan called for a 90km ride to be completed by 13.00 - in time to board a houseboat cruise for the afternoon and overnight. On paper this should have been fine with an 8am start, especially as the first 20km was a 1000m mountain descent which we should have been able to swoosh down in no time flat.
The flaw in this theory was the condition of that mountain road - which was very badly broken tarmac (in places barely a road at all) and required extreme care and control - you couldn't build up any speed because you never knew when the next pothole was going to be hidden round a corner or in a patch of shade. 
Our average speed down the descent was about 15 km/h when on a reasonable surface it could have been double or even triple that. I'm not complaining about the road surface per se - this is a minor road in India so should be expected, and personally I find roads like that quite exciting (Caroline is less of a fan!); I'm saying that the tour plan should have allowed for this.
The mountain views on the way down - when one dared to take one's eyes off the road - were terrific.
Once down off the mountain, we encountered rubber plantations for the first time - hard to photograph because of the deep shade - here's a tree which happened to be in a patch of sunshine, with its rubber collecting bag visible along with the scars from previous collections.
The second problem with being slow down off the mountain is that the full heat of the day was already upon us by the time we tackled the long slog to the coast. The second problem with the route planning was that this section took us along a busy main road which was grossly unsuitable for a bike tour. (Caroline sensibly bailed out into the support vehicle at this point.) Google Maps shows a network of smaller back roads heading in broadly the right direction, and I pleaded with Raju to research these and speak to the tour company about changing the routing for future runs of this tour.
A break for a cool drink and an ice cream was MOST welcome!
Soon we were into the coastal wetlands zone, with flooded rice fields, and backwater channels giving a foretaste of our boat tour.
At about 12.40, with another 12km or so still to cover to reach the boat landing, Keshu and I gave up the unequal struggle and all piled into the van to be chauffeured for the last bit by our driver Jamal. He is local to the town where we boarded the boat and gave us running commentaries - including pointing out the "Chinese" fishing nets on the lakeside which are similar to, but more extensive than, the more famous and highly photographed ones on the seafront at Kochi.
Arriving only 20mins behind schedule, we gratefully swapped the hurly-burly of the road for the tranquility of a houseboat made for two - another honeymoon? Don't mind if we do!! (The road crew weren't joining us for this bit 😁)
The houseboat crew cast off while we were getting showered and changed in the rustic but comfortable "stateroom", then served us lunch adrift on Vembanad Lake (India's largest lake, Jamal had proudly informed us), with a blissful cooling breeze coming off the water, and terns and cormorants darting around.
Afterwards, we were chauffeured sedately around the backwaters (even though the "traffic' did resemble Hyde Park Corner at times!) while we lounged on the sofa under the awning enjoying the views and the bird life. The only thing missing was a G&T!
